Roasted White Sweet Potato French Fries

July 13, 2016 by Felesha 5 Comments

These crispy roasted white sweet potato french fries are the healthy complement to your next sandwich or burger!!

Roasted White Sweet Potato French Fries

Let me start off by saying that I have never-ever-ever-ever in life enjoyed sweet potato french fries!!! No…not…neva!! I guess it’s the fact that I’ve been conditioned that french fries should always be savory, not sweet. I’d enjoy a healthy and delicious turkey taco burger {which is coming soon by the way in the Deliciously Healthy 30 Minute Meal Cookbook that I promised you} but could never accept those frozen little orange sticks to accompany said burger. It just wasn’t right I tell you! Oh and of course, it would be totally unacceptable to enjoy traditional Idaho white potato french fries, right?

So I was on a mission to develop a recipe that would give sweet potato fries a nice punch of spices to kinda cancel out a lot of that sweetness which don’t really belong in a french fries {in my opinion}. After all, sweet potatoes pack more of a punch for nutrition, right? They contain a lot more vitamins, fewer calories and carbs, and definitely more fiber. So we’re on the right track. Of course, I used my new favorite sweet potato, the Japanese white sweet potato!! Remember from my Turkey Taco Stuffed White Sweet Potato post that this variation isn’t as sweet as the traditional orange ones so I was already ahead of the game!! Plus they even look like Idaho french fries. SCORE!!!

I wanted to ensure that they would come out crispy so I made sure to soak the french fries to pull out some of the starch which can inhibit them from taking on that desired crispy texture. I also made sure that they weren’t touching one another on the baking sheet because this would surely cause them to steam rather than roast. They were so tasty and the accompanying avocado dip helped meet my dipping reflex needs as I couldn’t enjoy them with ketchup because remember, I gave up refined sugar for now. Still feeling better than ever though!! πŸ™‚ Remember I was hooked!! It hit me like a ton of bricks when I read in the Word,  Do you like honey? {“YEP” says my flesh.} Don’t eat too much, or it will make you sick! {I’m convinced.} – Proverbs 25:16 (NLT). Happy National French Fries Day BTW!! Until next time guys…Say Grace and enjoy!!

Ingredients

  • 2 large white sweet potatoes sliced 1/4 inch thick by 1/4 inch wide
  • 4 tsp. arrowroot
  • 2 T. grape seed oil
  • 1/2 tsp. chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp. onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp. white pepper
  • Generous pinch of cayenne
  • Salt sprinkled after roasting
  • Avocado Dip
  • 1 avocado
  • 1/2 seeded jalapeno
  • 1/4 of small red onion diced
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1/2 tsp. cumin
  • 2 tsp. yogurt
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • Handful of cilantro
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • Lime garnish (optional)

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, soak fries for 1 hour in enough cold water to cover. After 1 hour, pat really dry.
  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  • Place fries in a storage bag with arrowroot and shake the bag to lightly coat the fries completely.
  • Pour fries back into dry bowl and add the grape seed oil and all spices, EXCEPT the salt. DO NOT ROAST WITH SALT. Toss fries with fingers to coat completely.
  • Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and place fries individually on pan, making sure that they don't touch one another.
  • Roast for 20 min on and then flip and roast for another 10 minutes.
  • While potatoes are roasting, combine all of the avocado dip ingredients in a food processor and pulse until you reach your desired consistency.
  • Sprinkle with salt and optional lime juice. Serve with avocado dip and/or ketchup. Say Grace and enjoy!!

Hey! Thank you for this great recipe that I am surely going to make (now that I know what can be done with the Japanese Sweet Potato lol). Also thanks for the tips to help make fries crispier. I didn’t know either!
