Creamy and tender white beans with chunks of smoky ham is chock full of flavor and makes for a comforting yet economical lunch or dinner.
Happy Wednesday Guys! Anyone else out there have a picky eating toddler like me? This 21 month old enjoys something one day and will give the same food a look of disgust the next week. So bizarre I tell you!
HOW TO MAKE HAM AND BEANS
Jackson stopped drinking his pea protein milk and I’ve been trying to find ways to increase his calcium intake for proper nourishment and development. He absolutely loves ham and beans so when I discovered that Great Northern Beans provide about 120 mg of calcium per cup, I was overjoyed with delight.
Nothing like getting a toddler to eat good nutritious foods that create joy for them AND you. He also enjoys my lentil soup recipe so I make that quite a bit as well.
Learning how to make ham and beans is probably the easiest thing in life to cook. It’s literally just 7 ingredients (which include water) that creates so much comfort and sheer joy!! We’ve been really loving HoneyBaked’s Ham Bone lately if you want to give their’s a try.
And because Beans and Cornbread just simply go together, be sure to pair them with these sweet potato muffins or my hot water cornbread recipe to take things over the top. Jackson certainly insists (on using any type of bread fro dipping!! Haha! I really hope you’ll try them!
These ham and beans define comfort for me in the foodie realm. However, in the Spirit realm, I am comforted by The Great Comforter…the Holy Spirit. I find confidence in His presence for He is the only true source of hope and comfort. I choose to allow the Holy Spirit to guide and comfort me through difficult times until there is a testimony of His Grace in my life. How about you? Say Grace and enjoy guys!!
How To Make Ham and Beans {Great Northern Beans and Ham Bone}
Ingredients
- 16 c water divided
- 3-3.5 lb. ham bone most meat removed {make sandwiches out of the meat removed}
- 1 lb. dry Great Northern beans picked of debris/pebbles and rinsed well
- 1/2 c ketchup
- 3 T Kirkland Organic Seasoning
- 1 tsp. kosher salt
- 1 large carrot sliced (optional)
Instructions
- Soak beans in a large bowl with enough water to cover beans for 8 hours or overnight. Drain beans.
- In a large heavy bottom stockpot, combine ham bone, beans, ketchup, Kirkland seasoning, and salt.
- Add 8 cups of water; should cover beans entirely. Boil beans on medium high for about 1 hour and then add 4 more cups of water.
- Boil beans for another hour and then add the last 4 cups of water. Be sure your beans aren't sticking to the bottom of the pot. I love a thick bottomed pot for this reason.
- Cook 1 more hour until beans are tender and creamy. When there are about 15 more minutes to go, add carrots.
- Add more salt to taste, if needed. Serve with cornbread. Say Grace and enjoy!!
